Sherpa Underground Bio Venues

From the innovative mind of Jake Laufer, comes one of Washington, DC and the mid-Atlantic’s most unique and entertaining original bands.

The Sherpa Underground is a 4-piece powerhouse whose sound runs the gamut from catchy pop, to rockabilly, to classic punk, sometimes within the same tune. These varied elements are united in songs that are “never boring, occasionally mellow and sweet, often hilarious, and distinctly original." (gig-a-byte.com)

As a writer and singer, Jake Laufer’s polished songcraft has been compared to such notable acts as Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, and Ben Folds, with witty and occasionally off-beat lyrics that recall the quirkiest tracks from Barenaked Ladies and They Might Be Giants.

About Jake’s latest CD, A Viking Named ¡Caliente! The Washington Citypaper had the following reaction: “This kid's really going places! The disc puts all the pieces together: clever, thoughtful lyrics; supremely confident playing; solid production; and compelling melodies.” (December 15, 2000) The Washington Post took it one step further, recently naming his first single, “Walkabout” one of the top 10 songs of 2001.

Jake’s music has been included in regional compilations from Blue Light Records (NY) and Skytwin Records (DC) and is slated to be featured in an upcoming feature from Mulholland Films.

The Sherpa Underground has performed over the past two years at the area’s leading clubs and festivals, and has recently added a piano player/female vocalist to add new dimension to its sound . Jake also continues to tour as a solo act for more intimate acoustic shows.
